Bengals Take DT in Round 3

Any grumblings about not getting a defensive tackle on Day 1 of the NFL Draft were silenced when the Bengals grabbed Auburn's Pat Sims with their first pick on Day 2

The Bengals got their defensive tackle by taking Auburn's Pat Sims (6-3/314)with the first of two third picks in the third round. Head coach Marvin Lewis said it's likely Sims won't be the only defensive lineman taken among the eight picks the Bengals have on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.

"He's a big man who is very strong and has good extension; he's powerful," said Lewis. "It's about where we felt like you needed to pick him at."

Sims entered the draft after foregoing his senior season. Despite playing much of the season with a cast on his left hand Sims was a first-team All-SEC selection by the Associated Press. He started every game last season for the Tigers, finishing with 4½ sacks, 11½ tackles for loss and 15 quarterback pressures.

"One of the things I really noticed about him was when he was playing against Mississippi State," recalled Bengals defensive line coach Jay Hayes. "He was playing with a cast on his hand and was still making play after play after play. That's something that going into this league you're going to have to do. You're going to have to have that kind of toughness and still have the ability to beat someone and be effective."
