2004: Alexander was a versatile player for Denver in 16 games (1 start), showing special teams ability covering kicks as well as returning them while contributing as a reserve at cornerback. Alexander was looked to as a kick returner during his first NFL season, recording 19 returns for 386 yards (20.3 avg.). He was a spark plug on kick/punt coverage, making 12 tackles for the second-highest total on the Broncos, and he posted six defensive tackles (5 solo). Additionally, he recorded one fumble recovery while defending a kick return. He gained 18 yards on his only kickoff return vs. Ind. (1/2) and saw extended time as a nickel back, making one solo tackle. Alexander made the first start of his career at Tenn. (12/25) as the Broncos opened the game in a three-cornerback set, and the rookie posted a career-best four tackles (3 solo) along with one special teams tackle. With regular nickel back Willie Middlebrooks missing his first game after being placed on injured reserve, Alexander saw extensive time in passing situations at K.C. (12/19). He tackled Chiefs receiver Eddie Kennison on an onside kick returner in the fourth quarter. He played at cornerback in passing situations vs. Mia. (12/12) and made two stops on special teams. At S.D. (12/5), he returned four kicks for 62 yards (15.5 avg.) while seeing a few snaps on defense in passing situations. He gained 85 yards on four kick returns (21.3 avg.) vs. Oak. (11/28) and protected the ball despite the snowy, frigid conditions on the field. Alexander scooped up the first fumble recovery of his career at N.O. (11/21) on a first-quarter kick return by Michael Lewis, who had the ball jarred free by Terry Pierce. Later in that game, Alexander downed a 37-yard punt at the Saints’ 3-yard line and also made a tackle on special teams. The rookie was a factor on kickoff returns in New Orleans, gaining 87 yards on four returns (21.8 avg.), including a 28-yard return in the second quarter. He made a special teams tackle vs. Hou. (11/7). Returning kicks for the first time since the season opener vs. Atl. (10/31), he gained 79 yards on four returns (19.8 avg.), including a 25-yard return to begin the game and put Denver in solid field position for their first touchdown drive. He also tallied one special teams tackle against the Falcons. Alexander tackled Bengals kick return Cliff Russell on the opening kickoff on Monday Night Football at Cin. (10/25), stopping Russell after a 17-yard return. With nickel back Willie Middlebrooks out with a hamstring injury at Oak. (10/17) and cornerback Lenny Walls having left the game in the fourth quarter with a separated shoulder, Alexander saw some time at defensive back in addition to his special teams duties against the Raiders. He recorded one stop on special teams against the Raiders. In Denver’s comeback win vs. Car. (10/10), he played on special teams only. He pulled down kick returner Jamel White at T.B. (10/3) at the end of a 44-yard return in the fourth quarter, keeping the Buccaneers outside of Broncos territory. He also tackled another Buccaneer on special teams that day. He made a tackle on special teams vs. S.D. (9/26) while also seeing several plays on defense. He did not record any defensive action at Jac. (9/19) but made a special teams stop against the Jaguars.
