2004: Wilson anchored the Broncos’ defense through 16 games (16 starts) and was the undisputed emotional leader of the unit. Selected as a Broncos co-defensive captain by his teammates, Wilson ranked second on the Broncos in tackles with 109 (73 solo) while also making 2.5 sacks (-20 yds.), intercepting two passes (17 yds., including a touchdown), breaking up four passes and forcing two fumbles. He helped Denver secure a playoff berth for the second consecutive season with a team-high 11 tackles (9 solo) in a win vs. Ind. (1/2). At Tenn. (12/25), he split a sack (-3 yds.) with defensive tackle Mario Fatafehi in a four-tackle (3 solo) outing. He sacked Chiefs quarterback Trent Green at K.C. (12/19) for a 7-yard loss in the second quarter, forcing a fumble on the play in his seven-tackle (6 solo). Wilson posted his second interception of the year in a five-tackle (3 solo) game vs. Mia. (12/12). He picked off the Dolphins’ A.J. Feeley on the first play of the second quarter for a 10-yard return that set up a Broncos field goal. He added six tackles (4 solo) at S.D. (12/5). Wilson tallied eight tackles (5 solo) vs. Oak. (11/28), including a bone-jarring stop on running back Tyrone Wheatley on a 4th-and-1 in the first quarter. At N.O. (11/21), Wilson intercepted a second-quarter Aaron Brooks pass and returned it seven yards for a touchdown, marking his first interception since Dec. 10, 2000, vs. Seattle, and the first score of his career. Earlier in the game, he drilled Saints running back Deuce McAllister, who managed only 42 rushing yards, for a 3-yard loss on a screen pass, and he finished the day with eight tackles (6 solo). He tied for the team high in tackles with nine (6 solo) vs. Hou. (11/7), including three tackles for a loss. He showed great range in breaking up a David Carr pass against the Texans. Wilson led Denver’s linebackers with eight tackles (5 solo) vs. Atl. (10/31). He pried the ball loose from Falcons running back T.J. Duckett after his run brought Atlanta inside Denver’s 30-yard line in the second quarter, and teammate Reggie Hayward recovered the ball to register the turnover for Denver. Wilson tallied a team-high 10 tackles (6 solo) at Cin. (10/25) on Monday Night Football, including a sack for -10 yds. on an impressive second-quarter series in which Denver forced the Bengals to lose 11 yards on three plays when Cincinnati was inside the Broncos’ 25-yard line. Wilson recorded four stops (2 solo) in a Broncos defensive effort at Oak. (10/17) that held the Raiders to only 145 total yards. He posted his 21st-career double-digit tackle game in his strongest outing of the year vs. Car. (10/10) with a team-high 10 tackles (7 solo) that helped limit the Panthers to only 64 yards rushing. At T.B. (10/3), Wilson recorded five tackles (2 solo) in a hard-fought Broncos win. He led all Broncos linebackers with eight tackles (4 solo) vs. S.D. (9/26) while helping limit LaDainian Tomlinson to his lowest rushing total (60 yds.) in 15 games. Wilson twisted his left ankle late in the game vs. San Diego but returned to help seal the victory. |
