| When the St. Louis Rams cut strong safety Devin Bush at the tail-end of pre-season, the seven-year veteran was shocked. After all, he was considered a locker room leader and a competent playmaker on a team desperate to rebuild its defense. But as with so many veterans, Bush was a cap casualty. No wonder Butch Davis jumped at the chance to sign the former Florida State standout to a two-year deal. With Marquis Smith struggling, the Browns were anxious to shore up the defensive backfield.
Bush is not a monster at 6' 0" and 210 pounds, but he knows how to play. Last year with the Browns, Bush appeared in all 16 games, and recorded 58 tackles and two interceptions. Bush finished with 80 tackles for the Rams in 2000, ranked fourth on the team. In 1997 with the Falcons, his best year, Bush started 16 games at free safety and recorded 105 tackles--a career high. He's a versatile player as well, able to man both safety positions and contribute on special teams. |
