The Carolina Panthers have signed free agent S Kevin Kaesviharn and waived WR Jason Carter, the team announced Monday.

Signing a safety became a necessity after starting FS Charles Godfrey suffered a broken hand during last week's preseason game at the Miami Dolphins.

Kaesviharn, who turns 33 this Saturday, has started 58 games over his eight-year career with the Cincinnati Bengals and New Orleans Saints.

Carolina's defense has taken a lot of injury hits to several positions of late.

Starting DT Maake Kemoeatu (Achilles) was lost for the entire 2009 season. Starting MLB Jon Beason suffered an MCL sprain to his left knee during last week's game leaving him questionable for the start of the regular season. Backup S Nate Salley continues to deal with issues with his knees.

Starting WLB Thomas Davis (knee) returned to practice Monday.
