Jets exploring trade for RB Chris Ivory

Aiming to resurrect their ground and pound offense, Rex Ryan and company are closing in on landing one of the league's best kept secrets at the running back position in Chris Ivory.

Chris Ivory recently visited with the New York Jets, prompting speculation that the rebuilding New York franchise was interested in landing the young New Orleans running back.

New Orleans placed a second round tender on Ivory which would translate to a one-year deal worth just over two million dollars. Should the Jets sign Ivory and the Saints elect to not match the offer, the returning Sean Payton would receive Gang Green's second round pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

The Jets are in the market to land another power running back after Shonn Greene left for greener pastures in Tennessee. New York currently boasts a backfield of Joe McKnight, Bilal Powell, and the recently acquired Mike Goodson from Oakland. Gang Green stands poised to enter the 2013 season without a 1,000 yard rusher for the first time since 1994.

While the Jets refuse to part ways with their second round pick in exchange for Ivory, they are hopeful that the Saints would be willing to accept a fifth or sixth round draft pick instead New Orleans' backfield is loaded with talent with four capable backs splitting carries. Alongside Ivory, the Saints have Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, and Mark Ingram on their running back depth chart. Trading Ivory would benefit the Saints by helping shore up other needs on their current roster. Look for a defensive player to go to New Orleans should a deal occur, as the Saints finished dead last in defense last season.
